Frequently Asked Questions

  • This stuff looks really dangerous! Do people get hurt doing this?

Our top priority in all of our classes is ensuring the safety of our students. The rate of injury is no greater than other sports and is less than many sports.

  • Will I take hits to the head?

No. You will not take hits to the head in any class. We instead train using special equipment and techniques to simulate any strikes to the head. For those in Advanced MMA class, light sparring is an option.

  • I have no experience in MMA. Can I still train at the Academy?

Definitely! Many of our students come to the Academy with no training whatsoever. We will work with you on the basic skill set you’ll need to participate in classes. All but our Advanced MMA class are designed to be accessible to any student without prior training.

  • I'm not sure if I want to do this or not. Can I try out a class?

Certainly! Contact us to schedule a trial lesson, at no cost and without obligation.

  • Do I need to be in shape before I start training?

Not at all. Being in shape helps with anything, but students gain physical strength and stamina from the training itself. It’s advisable to consult with a health care provider before starting any kind of exercise program.

  • Do I have to fight to train at the Academy?

Absolutely not. Many of our students train simply for purposes of self-defense, or to get in shape, learn a new skill, or just enjoy the growth that comes with practicing the world’s most effective mix of martial arts.

  • I want to fight! When can I?

If you are interested in competing, speak with one of our coaching staff. While we encourage anyone who is interested and dedicated to compete, we also want to be certain that our students are physically and mentally prepared for the challenge.

  • Is it possible for me to do private training?

Yes. Private lessons are available, including lessons from Dave Strasser personally.

  • Are there women training at the academy?

Our classes are open to everyone, and women do participate. We can also offer women’s only classes where demand exists.

  • How often can I train?

All of our classes are unlimited, which means that you can attend as many of the sessions of the class(es) you purchase as you like.

  • What equipment do I need?

Shoes and socks are not worn in any class. Unless the the class lists the use of a gi below, a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants is appropriate attire.

    • Kids Stand Up: No special equipment needed
    • Kids Ground: A gi (martial arts uniform) comes with the registration fee and is the only required equipment and should be worn when indicated by the instructor.
    • Adult Stand Up students: 16oz boxing gloves, shin pads, mouthpiece. Men should have a groin protector.
    • Adult Ground students: Mouthpiece. Men should have a groin protector.
    • Advanced MMA students: MMA training gloves, shin pads, mouthpiece. Men should have a groin protector.
  • Does Dave Strasser actually teach classes personally?

Yes! Dave teaches mostly at the North Gym, and the Academy has excellent instructors at both gyms.
